Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade November 30-December 4

Bible: We continue to see God at work for the Hebrew people as they are enslaved by Eygpt. The final plague, the death angel, passes over the Hebrews but kills the firstborn in every Eygptian home. After 400 years of slavery, they will finally be freed. Notes will provided for Quiz 8 and Psalm 1:1-3, both scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4.

Spelling: List 11 words are American cities and the state's abbreviation. The pre-test and final test are on Wenesday and Friday, respectively. During the pre-test and test, I will say the city and state name, but students should be able to give the correct abbreviation for the state. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Dec. 3.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The Night We Started Dancing, pgs. 268-283. This story tells about an extended family from Guatamala that remains close despite the death of two its members. The comprehension quiz is set for Wednesday, Dec. 2. All of the prepositions should be memorized by Tuesday, Dec. 8 for a quiz.

Grammar lessons take us into chapter 4 where students will have more practice locating subjects and diagraming sentences.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted completing the position paper. Students have written the introductory paragraph which helps them set the stage for the rest of the paper. The hardest part is done!!

Math: Students will review material from chapter 4 on multiplying and dividing decimals in preparation for a test on Wednesday, Dec. 2. Chapter 5 highlights number patterns and fractions.

History: Chapter 4 history test is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1. Students have had notes for several weeks

Science: Notes will provided this week to review traits, DNA, and genetics

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade November 23-27

Bible: The Egyptian Pharaoh and his people trusted in false gods. They worshiped the Nile River, the sun, and even flies and frogs. God wanted to show that HE was the one true God. God sent Moses to Pharaoh to persuade him to let the Hebrews go from their bondage in slavery. Instead, the Egyptians endured terrible plagues because of Pharaoh's stubborness. Our life principle for the week is God truly controls the universe and everything in it, yet he gives us the ability to make choices. REMARKABLE!! We will continue to practice Psalm 1:1-3, but there will not be a quiz this week.

Spelling: List 11 terms are geography words. Students will need to know the spelling of each city on the list as well as the two letter abbreviation for each state in which the city is located. The pre-test is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 2 and the final test for Friday, Dec. 4. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, December 3.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled Song: History of the Tunrit, pgs. 266-267. The comprehesion quiz is due Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Grammar lessons review locating subjects, verbs, prepositional phrases, correctly spelling plural words, and the principal parts of verbs. The next preposition quiz will take place after Thanksgiving on Tuesday, Dec. 8 in which ALL of the prepositions should be memorized. The next grammar test is set for Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Writing workshop time will be devoted to working on the position papers as well as other assigned writings. Students have developed a list of "for/against" items on their topic as well as the thesis statement.

Math: Lessons will highlight changing metric units from one unit to another as well as reviewing presvious material. The chapter 4 test is set for Wednesday, Dec. 2

History: Notes have been distributed to students to prepare for chapter 4 test on the French, Spanish and English colonies in the New World. The test will be on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Science: Students are learning about how humans, animals, and plants receive traits through reproduction and genetics. They have been introduced to DNA and the differences between inherited and acquired traits.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade November 16-20

Bible: We will continue to study the life of Moses for whom God had a plan before he was even born. We see he spends 40 years in Eygpt, 40 years in the desert of Midian, and 40 years as a leader of Israel. Students will observe many positive character qualities Moses developed over all those years. We will seek to apply these to our own lives. Bible memory is Psalm 1:1-2 due on Friday, Nov. 20. Bible quiz 7 is set for Thursday, Nov. 19.

Spelling: List 10 words are geography terms. The final test is Friday, Nov. 20.

Grammar lessons will continue to provide practice in locating subjects, verbs, prepositional phrases, and spelling plural words correctly. Prepositions 1-40 will be quizzed on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to drafting the position paper. Students have selected their topics, found several articles to read, and now will begin crafting the introductory paragraph and writing the thesis statement. Other creative writing options will also be provided.

Math: multiplying and dividing by powers of 10, dividing by decimals, and mass and capacity.

History: We have learned the beginning of New Spain, New France, and New England in the New World. This week we will highlight New England's first successful colonies Jamestown and Plymouth. Students will develop a Travel Guide for enticing Europeans, especially the English, to come to live in New England. This is due Thursday, Nov. 19.

Science: The next chapter highlights the traits of living things. Students will understand combinations of triats and investigate how traits are inherited. Some vocabulary words include chromosome, heredity, mutation, DNA, gene, recessive, dominant

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade November 9-13

Bible: The next figure of focus is Moses. We see how God provided protection for him as a baby, educates him in the best schools, and prepares him to lead a new nation. Although he was not a "natural leader," God shaped him through life's circumstances to be what HE wanted him to be. Quiz 7 will be next Monday, Nov. 16. The new Bible memory passage is Psalm 1: 1-6. This week we will memorize Psalm 1:1 due Thursday, Nov. 12.

Spelling: List 10 words are geography terms. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Nov. 12. The pre-test is set for Thursday, November 12, and the final test is scheduled for next Friday, Nov. 20. The change in schedule is due to a shortened week.

Language Arts: The reading selection is entitled In Two Worlds: A Yupik Eskimo Family, pgs. 392-417. In this text, students will use the skill of comparing and contrasting. A comprehension quiz is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Grammar lessons provide practice in locating subjects, verbs, and prepositions. New material will focus on spelling rules for making plural words. Prepositions 1-40 will be quizzed on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Writing workshop time will provide students the opportunity to choose from a variety of topics for free writing in their journal. Journals will be checked weekly to verify they have written at least two pages during writing time. Additionally, research and planning will begin on the position paper.

Math: Concepts covered are multiplying decimals, dividing decimals, multiplying and dividing by powers of 10, mass and capacity.

History: Notes for chapter 4 were given to students last week. We will be filling them in as we progress through the chapter. After learning about the colonies in New Spain, students will focus on New France this week. We will read about where and why the French established forts and colonies.

Science: The test is scheduled for Wed., Nov. 11. Students have had notes from which to study for over a week. We will continue to observe the terrarium and aquarium ecosystems.

Other:
*Book report book must be approved by Miss Chapman this week.
*Read-a-Thon Wednesday afternoon from 1-3 PM. All students must have a chapter book to read during this time. A sleeping bag/pillow may be brought to class for this event.
*Conferences this week! No school Friday, Nov. 13
*Analogy meet changed again!!!!!!!! UGGGG! It will now be Wed., Dec. 9.
