Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade December 7-11

Bible: The Israelites have miraculously been freed by God from Eygpt, but because they lack faith, wander in the desert for years. During this time, they continue to doubt God by making poor choices. Additionally, we learn how God directed them to worship Him in the building of the first Tabernacle. On Friday, December 11, Bible Quiz 9 and Psalm 1:1-4 will be tested.

Spelling: List 12 words are animal terms. The pre-test and final test are scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, December 10.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The West Side, pgs. 284-295. In this story, the main character learns that just because he might not live in his native homeland, his family hertitage can still be precious. Students will observe the author's use of character development. The comprehension quiz is due Thursday, December 10.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to completing the position paper which is due Friday, December 18. The final copy should be typed, double-spaced including sources cited in a bibliography.

Math: Lessons this week will highlight concepts such as equivalent fractions, least common multiples, ordering fractions from least to greatest, mixed numbers, and improper fractions.

History: The next lessons will focus on the development of the English colonies. They are divided into New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. In the coming weeks, students will be divided into groups to prepare to teach their classmates about the colonies they will be assigned.

Science: We will complete our study of traits and how they are passed from one generation to the next. Students will understand that there are two types of reproduction - sexual and asexual. They will learn about how genes are expressed as either dominant or recessive. They will understand how hybrids are developed. They will also learn how God made animals and plants to survive in their enviroments using camouflage, warning coloration, and minicry. The test will be scheduled for Friday, December 18.
