Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade February 1-5

Bible: God provided a new leader for the people of Israel. It was Joshua who was given the privilege of leading the people into their promised land of Canaan. As we study the book of Joshua, we will see how obedience brought victory and disobedience brought defeat. By applying these truths to our lives, we will learn that if we are courageous and obedient, God will make us successful. Not as the world views success, but as God does. The Bible memory from Isaiah 40:26-28 will be due next Friday, Feb. 12 and Bible quiz 14 is scheduled for next week, Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Spelling: List 19 are English words borrowed from other languages. The pre-test will be next Wednesday, Feb. 10, and the final test is set for Friday, Feb. 12. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Feb. 11.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled Sacagawea's Journey, pgs. 268-281. The comprehension quiz is due Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Grammar lessons will provide review in simple and compound subjects and verbs, simple and compound sentences, the four purposes of sentences, locating out of the ordinary subjects and verbs, and diagramming sentences. A test will be set for Tuesday, Feb. 9.

Writing Workshop time will be used for journaling. Additionally, students will edit their tall tales and turn them in Wednesday, Feb. 3. We will also be journaling at winter camp. Be always observing, watching, and learning for something to write about!!!

Math: Concepts include changing customary units using either division or multiplication and reviewing previous material. The chapter 7 test is set for Wednesday, Feb. 10.

History: Taking a break to focus on science.

Science: Students will review food chains and webs and share thier biome posters.

*LCS Speech Meet Tuesday, Feb. 2 (top 6 scores in 5th grade will be presenting)
*Thursday, Feb. 4-5 Winter Camp. All students will be meeting at LCS @ 7:45 AM to load vehicles with luggage. Please meet in the foyer by the school office. If you are driving, please park on Hamburg Street. An informational packet is being sent home regarding what to pack and contact phone numbers. Parent chaperones are Mrs. Frederick, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Sedlak, Mrs. Weeks, and Mr. Zolinski.
*Analogy meet set for Thursday, February 18.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade January 25-29

Bible: In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses passes on to his heavenly reward. Who will God use to lead the Israelites now? Before he died, God allowed Moses to have a special vision of the future. What did God show him? Find out this week! Bible memory is Isaiah 40:26-27 set for Friday, January 29. Quiz 13 is also set for Friday, January 29.

Spelling: List 18 words are terms found in American documents. The pre-test and final test are set for Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, January 28. Students should learn to spell all words, but only are responsible for the definitions on #16-24.

Langauge Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The Story of Jumping Mouse, pgs. 256-267. In this story, the author uses sensory description to make the text powerful. Plan on completing the comprehension quiz by Thursday, January 28.

Grammar lessons continue to review identifying simple and compound sentences and punctuating them correctly.

Writing workshop time will provide time to complete the tall tale. The rough draft should be typed, double-spaced and turned in on Thursday, January 28. Speaking of TALL tales, a two foot picture of the story's hero or heroine is also due Thursday, January 28.

Math: New concepts include dividing fractions, weight and capacity

History: Taking a break to focus on science.

Science: The biome posters should be completed by Wednesday, January 29. Each group will explain their artwork, making sure to use the vocabulary we have been learning in science. New concepts this week included energy flow, food chains, food webs, and an energy pyramid.

Other:
*Class speech presentation for a grade is on Wednesday, January 27. From this presentation, I will select 6 students to present to judges on Tuesday, February 2 during the LCS school meet.
*Next analogy meet is set for Thursday, February 8. Keep studying your first list as well as the new list of terms.
*Winter Camp money and permission slip should be turned in by Friday, January 29.
*Report Cards coming home on Wednesday, January 27.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade January 18-22

Bible: As we continue to study the book of Numbers, we see God preparing the way for the Israelites to conquer the Promised Land, but their lack of faith is a stumbling block. As a result, God allowed them to wander in the desert for 40 years. A whole generation passed because of their rebellion against the Lord. A Bible quiz over lesson 12 will be given on Friday, January 22 as well as a Bible memory test from Isaiah 40:27. The new passage students will be learning is Isaiah 40:27-31.

Spelling: List 16 words are English words borrowed from the French language. The pre-test and final test will be scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Spelling sentences will be due Thursday, January 21.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled Younde Goes to Town, pgs. 250-255. This folk-tale comes from west Africa. Students should observe the author's use of time and order words as they read. A comprehension quiz is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Grammar lessons will help students differentiate between compound and simple subjects and verbs and compound and simple sentences. We will continue to practice identifying subjects and verbs in a vareity of sentence types.

Writing workshop time will be devoted to writing a tall tale. Pre-writing skills such as developing a character and identifying the rising action, obstacles, and climax will be completed this week. We have identified some common qualities in all tall tales which include the use of exaggeration and including landmarks that exist in real life.

Math: A math test on Chapter 6 is set for Monday, January 18. The next chapter highlights muliplication and division of fractions and changing customary units.

History: Students have almost completed their teaching of the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies to the class. One group still needs to finish on Monday. A turning point now comes in colonial history when the people become more and more frustrated with their "government" across the ocean - England (Great Britain). What happens next? It's the "shot heard around the world."

Science: Students will understand the definitions of ecosystem, community, and populations. With these vocabulary words in mind, we will identify the six major land biomes God created for the world.

*AuSable Institute Winter Camp permission slips and fees due soon.
*Next speech presentation - 1/2 memorized by Wednesday, Jan. 20. All memorized by Wednesday, January 27.
*Analogy words and definitions studied by Thursday, Feb. 18 for the second meet.
*Operation Warm Baby offering to be received through January 22. $3 will purchase cloth diaper, plastic pant, and bar soap for some of Dr. D.'s patients in Papua New Guinea.
*Thank you for the families that donated snacks for the 1st grade party! Your kids did a great job of planning and organizing it! Thank you, Mrs. Weeks, for chaperoning too.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade January 11-15

Bible: We have learned how God told Moses to organize the Israelites in their wilderness camp. This week we will apply these principles to our lives by reflecting on how we can better organize ourselves to be pleasing to God. Additionally, we learned how the Israelites complained even when God was providing for them. We will seek to learn ways to reverse complaining in our lives. Bible memory of Psalm 1:1-6 is complete, but now it's time to internalize the message of the passage. On Friday, Jan. 15 students will write at least three sentences explaining the meaning of these verses. On Wednesday, Jan. 13 Bible quiz 11 will be given.

Spelling: List 15 words are education terms. The pre-test and final test will be scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Jan. 14. Many students are now completing them over the weekend. That's great planning!!!!

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled Parmele, pgs. 348-353. The author's use of elaboration provides an excellent example of detailed description. The comp. check will be due Thursday, Jan. 14.

Grammar lessons continue to focus on locating subject and verbs in sentences and then diagramming them.

Writing workshop time will allow students write on various topics in their journals. Additionally, we will begin a new project of writing a tall tale. Discussion will center on the elements of tall tale and then planning the writing using brainstorming techniques. The top four ACSI entries will be announced this week and prepared to send to the district meet.

Math: This weeks lessons will review previous material such as adding and subtracting fraction with unlike denominators and a new lesson on measures of time. The chapter 6 test will be scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18.

History: The past week was consumed with students preparing the materials they will use to teach the class about the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies during the Colonial Period. This week the "writing" portion of the project is due. Many have started, and some have already finished their rough draft. They had the option of writing a letter, a news paper article, or a character sketch from the period in at least three paragraphs. The rough draft is due Wednesday, Jan. 13. Additionally, students will design their teaching methods and props for presentation on Friday, Jan. 15.

Science: How do living things interact with their environment? Which type of biome do you live in? Can you find your way around a food web? In the coming weeks, we'll be answering these questions!!

*Last week I forgot to mention how I was overwhelmed with your Christmas generosity and thoughtfulness. I believe I sent thank yous to all, but just wanted to say so again!!!!!! You guys are amazing. Love you all very much!!
*ACSI Speech memorization: 1/4 of speech memorized by Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1/2 memorized by Wednesday, Jan. 20, and all of it memorized by Wednesday, Jan. 27. Final LCS speech meet on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
*Thursday, Jan. 14 - Marble reward party has turned into a party for the first graders of LCS!! That's very cool!! The fifth graders are planning a fun-filled hour of snacks, games, skits, and crafts for our little friends down the hall. Make sure you plan to bring your supplies to school by Wednesday, Jan. 13. I am in need of a parent volunteer to help oversee a portion of the party time.
*Winter Camp at AuSable Institute is fast approaching!! It is scheduled for Thursday-Friday, Feb. 4-5 in Mancelona, MI. It is $100 per student and $100 per parent chaperone. Please be thinking about being a chaperone. I definately need at least 1-2 dads to go and moms are certainly welcome too. Please see attached sheet for details and acitivities. It's NOT just standing out in the cold; it's a beautiful setting with lots of time inside and outside!!!
*New analogy words have arrived. We will begin to study these to prepare for the next meet set for early March.
