Livingston Christian Schools 5th grade May 31-June 4

It doesn't seem possible the final chapter of the 2009-2010 school year is upon us. It has been my pleasure to love and challenge your children for this year. I only wish I could stop time and spend many more years with the children. They have accomplished much this year and grown academically, spiritually, and physically. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of knowing them and being part of their lives for this short time. Each one will ALWAYS be hidden in my heart.

Monday: No school

Tuesday: Safety Patrol Reward Party at Splash Village departure @ 8:45 am. Bring a towel, flip flops, and you may bring spending money, but it isn't necessary. Pizza lunch will be provided. I expect we shall return to LCS by 3:30.

Wednesday: 5th grade awards ceremony @ 9:30-10:30. The rest of the day will be spent working on our memoirs.

Thursday: Surprise Field Trip in the Pinckney area.

Friday: Receive yearbooks and have time for friends to sign. Clean room, desks, and lockers.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The Search, pgs. 230-245. This selection highlights the lives of people that today inhabit the American West. Miguel, the main character, comes from a family of New Mexican sheepherders. He is challenged by efforts to find lost sheep in time to save them. The comprehension quiz is due Thursday, May 27.

Grammar lessons focus on the use of quotations and accompanying punctuation.

Writing workshop time is devoted to editing and revising the tall tale as well as writing 5th grade memoirs. The final typed, double-spaced copy of the tall tale is due Thursday, May 27.

Bible: Fifth graders will present chapel on Wednesday @ 8:30 AM. Please join them as they present an overview of the Old Testament. This week during our study of the Bible in class, students will consider the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Proverbs is considered the book of "wisdom" as it contains many short statements filled with Truth. Ecclesiastes, on the other hand, outlines what life is like when man decides to live without God. The Bible memory verse test over Romans 8:26-27 is set for Friday, May 21.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is a light-hearted tall tale set in the West. It's entitled McBroom the Rainmaker, pgs. 218-229. While a fun tale to read, it illustrates the struggles faced by the early settlers in that part of the country. The comprehension quiz is due Thursday, May 20.

Grammar lessons will highlight puncuation skills.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to writing a tall tale. A rubric will be provided to students so they understand what elements are required for the composition. The typed rough draft is Friday, May 21.

Math: Lessons this week include comparing integers and adding integers.

History: How does a law come to be? Students will be submitting their ideas, called bills, to 5th grade congress. By the end of the year, they will have selected a bill to become 5th grade law. This exercise will assist students in understanding how our government is organized to balance out the three branches - no branch has more authority than the other. Additionally, we will learn about how the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution to protect the freedoms of people in the United States. We will also take a look at how the nation's new leaders during the 1780's worked together despite their growing differences. A test over this material will be set for Friday, May 28.

Science: The students have completed some great science research projects. This first experience is also challenging, but in the future, it should prove to be easier. I am anxious to have them share what they learned from the process.

We will also continue thinking about the earth in relationship to the sun. We've already learned the earth's axis is slightly tilted, resulting in the four seasons we experience each year. Discussion of the concentration and amount of sunlight a region receives determines the characteristics of the seasons.

Bible: Students are studying the book of Psalms. We will discuss why hiding God's word in our hearts and minds is so pleasing to God. Bible quizzes 25,26, and 27 are set for Tuesday, May 11. Students were provided notes last week for these quizzes. We will also begin a new Bible memory passage found in Romans 8:26-28. This week students are responsible for memorizing Romans 8:26 on Friday, May 14.

Grammar lessons continue to provide practice identifying pronouns. Students should prepare for a test on Friday, May 14 by using their grammar packet to study.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to completing the Science Research Paper and writing a Tall Tale set in the wild west. The research paper is due Friday, May 14 and the tall tale is due Wednesday, May 26.

Math: Students will review material presented in chapter 10 for a test on Thursday, May 13.

History: The first government of the United States had many problems and successes. Leaders had to work together to decide on a new plan of government. As a result, delegates created three branches of government.

Bible: After 209 years, Israel was conquered by the Assyrians while Judah survived 345 years before they were overpowered by Babylon. Some time later, the Persian Empire came to power. During this time, Ezra was born. He was from the line of Levites so he was a priest. As an adult, he had a deep desire to return to the home of his fathers. With permission from the Persian king, Ezra returned to Jerusalem to see what he could do about the ruins of God's temple. Ezra was a true, godly leader who helped many return to the Promised Land and begin the process of rebuilding the temple. Students will have Quiz 23 on Tuesday, April 27 and also write about the message of Proverbs 3:1-12 on Friday, April 30.

Science: Ideas about the seasons and the sun were sometimes unusual in days past. Today, with modern equipment we can better understand the reason for the seasons and the position of the sun in space. We will explore some of the false ideas scientists believed years ago.

We are learning a specific way to take notes while reading. This technique will assist students in writing their research project report in the coming weeks. As you have probably noticed, we are not on schedule for the science research project. That's ok. I'll give updated due dates to the students as each piece needs to be completed. Remember, most of the project is to be completed at school. You should have your data tables, log book, and three resources ready to share with me by Wednesday, April 28.

Bible: The next books of the Bible we will investigate are I and II Kings. These two books focus on the lives of Elijah and Elisha, prophets of God. We will see that after King Solomon, the nation of Israel divided into two kingdoms which was a fulfillment of God's discipline when Solomon chose to follow other false gods later in his life. As a result of Solomon's leadership, the entire nation suffered. This reminds us of the importance of godly leaders in our nation, towns, schools, and families. Will you be that leader in the place where God has placed you? Quiz 22 is set for Tuesday, April 20. Proverbs 3:1-12 will be tested on Friday, April 23.

Writing Workshop time will be partially devoted to organizing the science research project. The other portion of the time students will work on another tall tale based on one of the reading stories from our Western Unit. The due date for the tall tale will be flexible as our focus will be on the research project right now.

Math: Students will be instructed in identifying the circumference of a circle, the area of a circle, constructing angles, and classifying solids.

History: We will review chapter 9 material on the Revolutionary War for a test on Monday, April 26.

Science: Students have designed and planned a science research project. The next step is complete the observations and collection of data. This week students need to have found three resources to read about their topic that will help them generate the research portion of the project. These resources can be library books, articles, or internet sources and must be availabe at school by Wednesday, April 21.

Additionally, we will study why the earth experiences the different seasons, including vocabulary such as solstices and equinoxes.

Writing workshop time will encourage students to write stories from their imagination using a series of three pictures. Have fun!!

Math: Lessons this week will focus on the concept of the area of a parallelogram and a triangle.

History: At the close of the French and Indian War, it seemed all should be settled, but many began opposing Great Britain with much vigor. This led to the Revolutionary War. This week we will compare the Continental and British armies. We will recall Washington's bravery in the challenging days during the winter at Valley Forge. Some wondered if the colonists would ever claim victory. Surprisingly, there was a turning point. We'll find out what happened.

Science: Perform experiments at home this week. Make sure you design a fair test (a fair race), keep a log of everything you do, and create a data table for all your findings. Your experimental portion should be completed by the end of this week.

*I am serving on an ACSI Accredidation Team from Wednesday through Friday this week in Grand Rapids. In two years LCS will recertify our program and therefore it is expected that all ACSI schools assist each other in this important process. I am disappointed I will not get to "hang out" with my kids for a good portion of the week, but this experience in invaluable to me (and LCS) professionally. Thank you for understanding in this matter.

History: During the Revolutionary War the Continental Army overcame great obstacles to turn the war in its favor. The Colonial army had limited supplies compared to the British, but Washington's leadership during the winter at Valley Forge provided great courage and help for the soldiers.

Math: Concepts covered this week: congruent and similar figures and line symmetry. We will review for a test early next week.

History: The colonists cut ties with the British government and formed their own country. People in the new nation had different views about how to achieve independence. To win the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army overcame great obstacles to turn the war in its favor. What was the turning of the war? We'll find out this week.

Science: Students have received notes to prepare for the chapter 5 science test scheduled for Thursday, March 25.

Bible: As we continue to study I Samuel, students will read about Israel's first king, Saul. We will learn that Saul disobeyed God identifying his rebellious heart. We will see how the pattern of jealousy, hatred, and murder were the patterns of Saul's life. Bible Quiz 18 will be rescheduled for Thursday, March 18. The review test on lessons 1-17 is set for Wednesday, March 17. Students can prepare for this test by studying pgs. 89-93 in their Bible workbook. On Friday, March 19, students will be responsible for memorizing Proverbs 3:1-4.

Spelling: The pre-test and final test are scheduled for March 17 and 19, respectively. Students should be completing their flower encyclopedia which is due Friday, March 19. This notebook should contain a picture of the flower and a fact-filled sentence describing the plant. The spelling words are on the previous blog entry.

Language Arts: Grammar lessons will continue to provide practice in using commas and apostrophes correctly.

The summary of the Declaration of Indepedence and the three paragraph essay about one of the signers of the Declaration are due Friday, March 19. Students will also edit/revise poetry and share the final product with the class in a Publication Celebration.

Math: Concepts include classifying triangles and quadrilaterals

History: Chapter 8 history test is set for Tuesday, March 16. Students have reviewed in class and have notes from which to study.

Science: Humans impact ecosystems in many ways from logging, building development, and other human actions. Pollution affects air, water, and land. These cause reductions in populations of certain species. Governments have passed laws to protect environments. Are these laws good or bad? A science test will be coming next week.

Bible: Students will begin studying I and II Samuel. Samuel was Israel's last judge because they wanted to be like the nations around them who had a king as their leader. This broke God's heart because HE was meant to be their King of Kings. In this Old Testament book, we follow the lives of three men - Samuel, Saul, and David. As we learn about young Samuel, lessons can be applied to our own lives about what prayer is and what it is not. Bible memory will be taken from Proverbs _______ to be tested on Friday, March 12, but the Bible quiz 18 is set for next Tuesday, March 23. Additionally, students will have a review test over all lessons 1-17 on Wednesday, March 17. They should prepare for this test by studying pgs. 89-93 in their Bible workbook. Providing a test like this prepares 5th graders for semester exams that occur in 6th grade.

Spelling: The pre-test and final test will be set for March 17 and 19, respectively. For the next two weeks, students will work on a Flower/Plant Encyclopedia. Since many of the spelling words are names of flowers and plants, students are to locate a picture (google images is a good place to find them) and glue it into a notebook that has been provided for them. Additionally, each photo should have an accompaning sentence which provides a true fact about that flower or plant. Looking the words up in a dictionary or on-line encyclopedia will assist in writing a fact-filled sentence. As always, neatness, spelling, punctuation, and capitals count in grading this project.

Language Arts: This week we will take a breat from the reading text. In its place, we will read a copy of an important historic document called the Declaration of Independence. We will become familiar with its format, content, and several vocabulary words. In place of a comprehension quiz, students will write a summary of the document and write a 3 paragraph essay about one of the signers of the the Declaration of Independence. These signers were brave men who put their very lives on the line by signing such as writing. The 3 paragraph essay and summary may be typed or written double spaced and are due Friday, March 19.

Grammar lessons continue to highlight the usage of commas in sentences, addresses, and dates.

Writing Workshop time will focus on editing and revising poetry. Six rough draft, typed poems are due Tuesday, March 9. The final copies of the poems are due Friday, March 12. On this day students will enjoy a Publication Celebration as we share our work and enjoy a snack.

Math: Chapter 9 highlights geometry. Students will learn about angles and classification of angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals

History: Chapter 8 history test will be set for Tuesday, March 16. Students have received notes. This week we will review the material using various methods such as games, art, and writing projects.

Science: Watch them grow!! Students designed an experiment to test limiting factors in nature. We will document growth in a data table and take notes on observations of the growth. We will learn how ecosystems have limited resources. We will observe how living and non-living things can upset the balance of nature. Students will understand that God made living things to respond to changes by relocating or adapting, but in some cases, living things perish. This is a result of sin in the world.

Colonists continued to hope for peace, but they soon realized they may have to plan for war. Will the colonies unite against Great Britain? Will they seek to be free from their mother country? Students have notes to begin studying for the next history test in several weeks.

As a result, God allowed them to wander in the desert for 40 years. A whole generation passed because of their rebellion against the Lord. We have identified some common qualities in all tall tales which include the use of exaggeration and including landmarks that exist in real life.

Math: A math test on Chapter 6 is set for Monday, January 18. The next chapter highlights muliplication and division of fractions and changing customary units.

History: Students have almost completed their teaching of the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies to the class. One group still needs to finish on Monday. A turning point now comes in colonial history when the people become more and more frustrated with their "government" across the ocean - England (Great Britain). What happens next? It's the "shot heard around the world."

Science: Students will understand the definitions of ecosystem, community, and populations. With these vocabulary words in mind, we will identify the six major land biomes God created for the world.

Additionally, we learned how the Israelites complained even when God was providing for them. We will seek to learn ways to reverse complaining in our lives. Bible memory of Psalm 1:1-6 is complete, but now it's time to internalize the message of the passage. The top four ACSI entries will be announced this week and prepared to send to the district meet.

Math: This weeks lessons will review previous material such as adding and subtracting fraction with unlike denominators and a new lesson on measures of time. The chapter 6 test will be scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18.

History: The past week was consumed with students preparing the materials they will use to teach the class about the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies during the Colonial Period. This week the "writing" portion of the project is due. Many have started, and some have already finished their rough draft. They had the option of writing a letter, a news paper article, or a character sketch from the period in at least three paragraphs. The rough draft is due Wednesday, Jan. 13. Additionally, students will design their teaching methods and props for presentation on Friday, Jan. 15.

Science: How do living things interact with their environment? Which type of biome do you live in? Can you find your way around a food web? In the coming weeks, we'll be answering these questions!!

Bible: As students begin studying Numbers, the next book of the Old Testament, they will see God's concern for order. God is big on organization as we will see when he organized the Israelites into tribes and groups. We will also see the results of a complaining spirit and how God meets the needs of Hebrew children as they wonder in the desert for 40 years. Bible memory is Psalm 1:1-6 set for Friday, Jan. 8. There will not be a Bible quiz this week.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The Land I Lost, pgs. 338-347. This is a reading about a boy who had to leave his homeland because of war. It provides the reader with the understanding that immigrants feel lonely for the lands they left. The reading comprehension quiz is set for Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Grammar lessons will highlight identifying subjects, verbs, and prepositional phrases in sentences as well as diagramming these sentence parts.

Writing Workshop time will be focused on learning about writing a new genre called tall tale. Students will develop a unbelievable "character" that can do things which are exaggerated. Additionally, it is time to choose a writing to enter into the ACSI writing festival. More to come on this later!

Math: Lessons this week focus on fraction estimation, adding/subtracting fraction with common denominators and unlike denominators.

History: Students will begin preparing to teach their assigned chapter to the class on the original 13 colonies. Each group will develop notes, graphs, and writings to share with the class. The graphs are due this Friday, Jan. 8.

Math: Lessons this week highlight concepts such as mixed numbers and improper fractions, and changing decimals to fractions. The next math test will be Tuesday, December 22.

History: This week students will be assigned groups to work on the next history project. Each group will be assigned a portion of the next chapters to teach the class about the New England colonies that developed after Jamestown and Plymouth were established. The project will be due after Christmas sometime.

Science: On Monday December 21, a science test will given over chapter 3 - Traits of Living Things. Notes are available in the science binders.

Bible: The Israelites have miraculously been freed by God from Eygpt, but because they lack faith, wander in the desert for years. During this time, they continue to doubt God by making poor choices. Additionally, we learn how God directed them to worship Him in the building of the first Tabernacle. On Friday, December 11, Bible Quiz 9 and Psalm 1:1-4 will be tested.

History: The next lessons will focus on the development of the English colonies. They are divided into New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. In the coming weeks, students will be divided into groups to prepare to teach their classmates about the colonies they will be assigned.

Science: We will complete our study of traits and how they are passed from one generation to the next. Students will understand that there are two types of reproduction - sexual and asexual. They will learn about how genes are expressed as either dominant or recessive. They will understand how hybrids are developed. They will also learn how God made animals and plants to survive in their enviroments using camouflage, warning coloration, and minicry. The test will be scheduled for Friday, December 18.

Bible: We continue to see God at work for the Hebrew people as they are enslaved by Eygpt. The final plague, the death angel, passes over the Hebrews but kills the firstborn in every Eygptian home. After 400 years of slavery, they will finally be freed. Notes will provided for Quiz 8 and Psalm 1:1-3, both scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4.

Spelling: List 11 words are American cities and the state's abbreviation. The pre-test and final test are on Wenesday and Friday, respectively. During the pre-test and test, I will say the city and state name, but students should be able to give the correct abbreviation for the state. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Dec. 3.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The Night We Started Dancing, pgs. 268-283. This story tells about an extended family from Guatamala that remains close despite the death of two its members. The comprehension quiz is set for Wednesday, Dec. 2. All of the prepositions should be memorized by Tuesday, Dec. 8 for a quiz.

Grammar lessons take us into chapter 4 where students will have more practice locating subjects and diagraming sentences.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted completing the position paper. Students have written the introductory paragraph which helps them set the stage for the rest of the paper. The hardest part is done!!

Bible: The Egyptian Pharaoh and his people trusted in false gods. They worshiped the Nile River, the sun, and even flies and frogs. God wanted to show that HE was the one true God. God sent Moses to Pharaoh to persuade him to let the Hebrews go from their bondage in slavery. Instead, the Egyptians endured terrible plagues because of Pharaoh's stubborness. Our life principle for the week is God truly controls the universe and everything in it, yet he gives us the ability to make choices. REMARKABLE!! We will continue to practice Psalm 1:1-3, but there will not be a quiz this week.

Bible: The next figure of focus is Moses. We see how God provided protection for him as a baby, educates him in the best schools, and prepares him to lead a new nation. Although he was not a "natural leader," God shaped him through life's circumstances to be what HE wanted him to be. Quiz 7 will be next Monday, Nov. 16. The new Bible memory passage is Psalm 1: 1-6. This week we will memorize Psalm 1:1 due Thursday, Nov. 12.

Bible: Exodus opens with a view of the bondage the Israelites faced as they continued to live in Eygpt. In the Bible, Eygpt is often a picture of sin. Students will see how Satan puts us in bondage through giving into temptation. The Bible, however, provides direction on how to resist temptation. Bible quiz 6 will be scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5. This week students will complete their study of Psalm 19:1-14 by writing the message from this passage. They will write in their own words the meaning of the verses. Generally, I expect at least one sentence for every two verses. That would mean they would write 7 sentences to explain the passage.

Spelling: List 9 words are recreation terms. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Nov. 5. The pre-test and final test will be set for Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Language Arts: The reading selection is entitled Voyager to the Planets, pgs. 182-199. The author of this text uses elaboration through providing facts. The comprehension quiz is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Grammar lessons will provide practice in identifying verbs, subjects, and prepositional phrases. The next preposition quiz is on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Students will be responsible for memorizing the first 30 prepositions: aboard, about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, by, down, during, except, for, from, in, into, inside, of, off, on, over.

I will continue to model writing a position paper by taking the position that the earth is between 6000-10,000 years based on biblical authority. Students are learning about writing a thesis statement, identifying counter-arguments, and establishing assertions. This week they will select their own topic on which to take a position from a list of options. Parents will approve the topic selection by the following week.

A publication celebration will take place on Wednesday to honor the diligent efforts of the Explorer's Journals that were recently completed. Students will enjoy a sweet snack as they read their writing to the class.

Math: Chapter 3 math test is set for Monday, Nov. 2. Other concepts of the week include: multiplying decimals and whole numbers, the distributive property, and dividing whole numbers.

History: What happened after explorers traveled the world? Many European poeple from Spain, France, and England began competing for land rights in the New World - where WE live! We will read about the struggles and triumphs and who finally won out in the long run.

Science: This week's lessons will highlight the reproduction of seedless plants and conifers and God's plan for pollination methods and seed dispersal. Students continue to observe their terrariums for plant growth as well as activities from the sowbugs and pillbugs. We will also create the aquarium ecosystem. Eventually, these will be combined to build a complete and self-sustained ecocolumn similar to our earth. A test will be scheduled for early next week.

*Book-it slips for October are due by Tuesday. Select a book you really want to read that has at least 250 pgs. in it. We will have a Read-a-Thon afternoon next week featuring your personal pillow and/or sleeping bag! If you don't select a good book, I'll do it for you!!!!

Bible: We will conclude our study of Joseph's life this week as we consider his example of forgiveness. Again, we see God's principle that although life doesn't always work out the way we want it to, God can still work all things together for our good. The Bible memory passage Psalm 19:1-12 will be tested on Friday, Oct. 30. Quiz 5 on Joseph's life will be on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Spelling: List 7 words are music terms. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Oct. 29. The pre-test and final test are set for Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled Circles, Squares, and Daggers, pgs. 146-155. Students will observe the author's use of headings and captions to organize the text. A comprehension quiz is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29.

Writing Workshop time will provide instruction in writing a "position paper." Over the next several weeks, I will model what a position paper is and and how it is organized. Later, students will take a position on a particular topic and write a 5 paragraph essay about it.

Grammar lessons will focus on locating verbs, nouns, and prepositional phrases in sentences. The next 10 prepositions should be memorized in addition to the first 10: aboard, about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, by, down, during. Students will write these from memory on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Math: Concepts covered this week are the following: decimal estimation; adding and subtracting decimals; review of previous material. A test is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 2.

History: Chapter 4 highlights the European settlement of the New World - North America. We will see how Spain, France, and England all compete for land in the New World between 1600-1700's. Students will receive notes as we progress through the material to study for the test scheduled two weeks from now.

Science: Students will understand that vascular plants have specialized structures used to transport materials and compare them to nonvascular plants. They will be able to describe the reproduction process in spore-bearing plants and compare the differences in gymnosperms and angiosperms. They will observe the germination process and oxygen/carbon cycle in their ecocolumn.

Bible: This week's life principle is that God works all things together for our good, but He doesn't promise things will always be easy or comfortable. This is certainly revealed in the life of Joseph as he faced many trials in Eygpt where he was sold to be a slave. In the end, however, God used his influence to provide for his family many years later. The Bible memory test is Psalm 19:1-12 to be given on Friday, Oct. 23. The Bible 5 quiz will be set for Thursday, Oct. 22.

Spelling: List 6 words are food terms. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Oct. 22. Students have been directed to write sentences that reveal they understand the meaning of the word. For example, "What is a carbohydrate?" would not be acceptable because I am unable to understand if they really know the word's definition. The pre-test and final test are set for Wednesday and Friday, respectivley.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The Heavenly Zoo, pgs. 228-245. The legends in this reading showcase the author's talent for writing descriptive paragraphs. A comprehension quiz is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Grammar lessons highlight prepositions and prepositional phrases. Students will have a quiz over prepositions 1-10 on Tuesday, Oct. 20. They have already received a list of common prepositions. Knowing these words will help students distinguish between verbs and prepositions.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to revising the Explorer's Journal. The typed, rough draft is due Monday, Oct. 19. The final revisions are due Thursday, Oct. 22. The final copy must be typed, double spaced, and in font 12.

Science: As we begin to build the ecocolumns, students will observe plant growth. This will assist them in describe the process of photosynthesis, leaf structure, and the role of plants in the carbon and oxygen cycles. We will learn the difference between vascular and nonvascular plants and describe the process of reproduction in gymnosperms and angiosperms.

Bible: The principle for this week is that whatever a person does, whether it be good or bad, it will be returned to him. The Bible says, "Whatever a man sows, he will reap. We will wrap-up our study of Jacob's life and see how God taught him to overcome deception and make amends with his brother. Bible quiz 4 is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, and Bible memory is Psalm 19:1-10 on Friday, Oct. 16.

Spelling: List 5 words are more plural terms. The pre-test and final test are set for Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Oct. 15.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled Galileo, pgs. 166-175. Dicussion will center on how the author used elaboration through providing concept information. The comprehension quiz will be scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Grammar lessons will highlight prepositions and prepositional phrases. Students will be memorizing a list of common prepositions. They will be quizzed over the first ten words on Tuesday, Oct. 20. After understanding the common preposition, students will be better equipped to distinguish verbs from prepositions.

Writing Workshop time will continue to provide instruction on writing historical fiction in the form of the Explorer's Journal. Students have begun the rough draft which should be completed by Friday, Oct. 16. After one-on-one editing with students, a typed rough draft will be turned in by Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Math: Concepts covered this week -mean, median, mode, range; and review of previous material. The chapter 2 test is tentatively set for Friday, Oct. 16.

History: The Explorer's Projects are well underway. The map, 5 W's, and artifacts are due Wednesday, Oct. 14. Students should decide today what artifact they will construct. This project is to be completed at school.

Science: Very soon we will begin building ecocolumns to create water and land environments in the pop bottles students have contributed.

Fifth Grade Livingston Christian Schools Oct. 5-9

Bible: After applying life lessons from Abraham, Sarah, and Isaac, we move on to Jacob and Esau. We will meditate upon the principle that a man reaps what he sows. Lesson 3 quiz will be on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The Bible memory test on Psalm 19:1-8 is set for Friday, Oct. 9.

Spelling: List 4 words are plural terms. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Oct. 8. The pre-test and final test are set for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Language Arts: the reading selection this week is entitled Sun and Calendars, pgs. 156-165. We will observe how this author used strong topic sentences. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the comprehension quiz will be distributed.

Grammar lessons will continue to focus on spelling irregular verbs as well as reviewing helping verbs, compound verbs, and being verbs. A test will be scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to supporting students in writing historical fiction. As part of the Explorer's Project, each student has been assigned an explorer from the 1400-1500's. Just as ancient explorers kept journals of their expeditions, each student will write a "pretend" journal including the criteria defining historical fiction such as a story that takes place in the past, a plot that includes events from history, period dialogue and vocabulary.

Math: Lessons will include concepts such as bar graphs, coordinates, line graphs, and circle graphs.

History: Students have been assigned an explorer for which they will be researching and creating items to teach the class about this person's life. Students have received an outline of the requirements for this in-school project. Presentations will be shared on Wednesday, Oct. 14 so all parts should be completed by that time.

Science: A test on cells, single-celled organisms, and human body systems is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9 after the field trip. Students have received a study packet and should use this to prepare for the test.

*Health Exploration Station Field trip - Friday, Oct. 9. Depart LCS at 8:30 and arrive back by 2:00. Bring money for a subway lunch. Mrs. Weeks, Mrs. Frederick, and Miss Chapman will be driving.

Bible: As we continue the study of Genesis, we come to period of time in which Abraham lived. Even today, we enjoy the convenant that God with him and learn about his promised son, Isaac. Quiz 2 is set for Tuesday, Sept. 29. Students have notes from which to study. Memory work on Psalms 19:1-6 is due Friday, Oct. 2.

Spelling: List 3 words are agriculture terms. The pre-test and final test are set for Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Oct. 1.

Language Arts: The reading selection is entitled How Did We Find Out the Earth is Round?, pgs. 122-139. While reading, students should pay attention to the questions and conjectures offered by the author. The comprehension quiz is set for Wednesday, Sept. 30 and will be due the next day.

Grammar lessons focus on the review of helping, compound, and being verbs in addition to selecting the principal parts of selected verbs. A test will be scheduled for next week.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to editing and revising the kitchen story. It should be typed, double-spaced in 12 font by Friday, Oct. 2. I will work with students individually to make corrections.

Math: Chapter 1 math test is set for Monday, Sept. 28. Chapter 2 highlights measuring length, perimeter and area, and scale drawings.

History: This week, each student will be assigned an explorer from the 1400-1500's to research and prepare a presentation for the class. This in-school project will take several weeks.

Science: Students will use their posters they created last week to teach the class about the 6 systems of the body. Notes will be given to help students prepare for the upcoming science test next week.

Bible: In lesson 2, we review the results of sin and the blessing of redemption in the lives of Adam and Eve. Later, we apply these truths to our own lives. Bible quiz 2 is set for next Tuesday, Sept. 29. On Friday, Sept. 25, students will be responsible for memorizing Psalm 19:1-4.

Spelling: List 2 words are terms found in the home. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, Sept. 24. The pre-test and final test are scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Language Arts: The reading selection is entitled The Struggle for an Education, pgs. 68-75. The comprehension quiz will be on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Grammar lessons will continue to focus on the verb part of speech. Helping verbs, being verbs, verb phrases, and irregular verbs will be reviewed. A grammar test will likely be scheduled next week.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to thinking about varying sentence structure to make more interesting sentences. To do this, each student will draw a map of the kitchen in their home. Then, based on the map, they will brainstorm as many stories as they can about the kitchen. Perhaps a funny thing happened with the dishwasher or maybe the dog ate something off the counter. Do you have a special memory making a tasty treat with a family member? Another important part of this assignment is to share a recipe that is "kid friendly." Do you have an easy recipe you use to make a special treat? If you don't, ask Mom or Dad to help you find a recipe that you'd like to try. Please type and turn in the recipe by Monday, Oct. 5. The map drawing and story writing will be completed at school.

Math: Lessons will focus on the following concepts: Using mental math and equations, problem solving strategies, reviewing previous material. A math test is slated for Monday, Sept. 28.

History: Exploration in the 1400-1500's coming soon!

Science: How do cells of organisms compare? How are cells organized? All living organisms are organized into six kingdoms: bacteria, protists, fungi, plant and animal. Cells join together to form the structures that perform basic life functions: cells, tissues, organs, systems, organisms.

Bible: We will study portions of Genesis and Revelation to see the "book ends" of God's plan for man. Notes will be provided to prepare for Bible Quiz 1 on Thursday, Sept. 17. Bible memory, Psalms 19:1-2, will be tested in WRITING on Friday, Sept. 18.

Spelling: List 1 pre-test is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 16. If 100% is earned on this pre-test, the student does not have to take the test again on Friday, but if just one word is misspelled, the final test is set for Friday, Sept. 18. A new list will be sent home on Friday to be studied over the weekend.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled Mukasa at School, pgs. 40-45. As we enjoy this story, we see how Mukasa's first experiences with reading are exciting. A comprehension quiz is set for Wednesday, Sept. 16. and should be turned in by Thursday, Sept. 17.

Grammar lessons provide practice in locating singular and compoud verbs in sentences.

Writing Workshop time provide time to write or read. This week students will write descriptions of scenery. We will learn how choosing the right verb to use in a sentence can make writing more interesting. In fact, we will have a funeral to bury "dead verbs."

Math: Lessons will cover concepts such as powers, exponents, order of operations, and variables.

History: God speed! That's how people said "good-bye" in the 1400-1500's as many left their homeland to explore the world. We will learn how and why people took such great risks in these expeditions.

Science: Now that we know what is contained within the smallest living things, we will now learn about "animals" that only have ONE cell in their whole body! They are called single-celled organisms. Some words you will learn are cilia, flagellum, diffusion, and osmosis. Students will be assigned a project to create a model of a plant or animal cell at home. Please see the attached sheet for requirements. This is due Monday, Sept. 28.

5th Grade Blog Sept. 8-11

Bible: In the beginning . . . Genesis. Fifth graders will be studying the Old Testament this year. We begin by learning how the Bible was written, its purpose, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. A quiz is scheduled for next week, Sept. 16, on lesson 1. A study guide will be provided this week. In fifth grade, we memorize Bible passages by testing on two verses each week. On Fridays, students will WRITE the verses for the test. The first Bible test will be set for Friday, Sept. 18 on Psalm 19:1-2. Over a period of weeks, students will memorize the entire Psalm!

Spelling:
Language Arts: The reading selection is entitled The Library Card, pgs. 14-45. From this fiction story, we learn a successful learner must be willing to work hard to meet goals. A reading comprehension quiz is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11. Students are to use their books to answer the multiple choice questions as well as the essay portion. I will model how to respond to the essay questions appropriately.

Grammar lessons will review the part of speech called the verb. Exercises will be completed during school unless the work is not finished.

Writing Workshop time is set aside every day. It is a time set aside for either pleasure reading or writing. The first writing publication will be a historical fiction piece. Students will be guided through the process and given due dates for specific parts of the assignment. Requirements will follow in the coming weeks.

Math: I will give a math assessment test this week to help me determine the level of mathemathical concepts represented among the 5th graders this year. The text we use is actually a sixth grade book, but because the ABeka math they have had, they are usually quite prepared to take this leap into the McDougal Littell math text. Fifth grade is a transition year in preparation for middle school where this program is used. I scaffold the instruction carefully so as to allow for varying levels of ability. The first lessons comprise concepts such as whole number operations, estimating, powers, and exponents. Students use a math notebook while I teach the lessons. This is useful in reviewing for upcoming tests.

History: The time is 1570. It's a time of encounters for Europeans who leave their continent to explore the world. We learn how the world's cultures become interconnected through exploration, understand the Portuguese wanted to find a water route to Asia, and understand the desire for wealth caused competition among many nations to send expeditions around the world. Students will be given requirements for an upcoming project in the following weeks.

Science: Cells are remarkable creations by God. We will learn what they are, why they are important, and how they survive. We will understand how our blood, muscles, bones, and nerves are made of different types of cells. Students will have the opportunity to view cells under a microscope and observe how a single-celled organism feeds itself!

*This week, parents get some homework too! Please read the packet I have prepared as well as return the safety patrol schedule and lesson for the teacher with parent feedback.
*September book report is due Sept. 30. Students will receive requirements this week for the "Sandwich Report." Select a book this week, get it approved, and begin reading it NOW!
*Start saving 2 liter pop bottles. We need them for science in the next month. Each student will need three of them. If you have more than three, bring them in anyway. Someone else may want them. WASH them and take off the paper labels too!!
*Can you spare $1 campaign!!!! We are enjoying new technology that we need to pay for!
*I love to have parents help in the classroom or at home. Let me know if you're able. I especially need someone on MONDAY mornings to file student papers. It takes about 10-15 minutes to complete the task.
