Livingston Christian Schools 5th grade May 31-June 4

It doesn't seem possible the final chapter of the 2009-2010 school year is upon us. It has been my pleasure to love and challenge your children for this year. I only wish I could stop time and spend many more years with the children. They have accomplished much this year and grown academically, spiritually, and physically. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of knowing them and being part of their lives for this short time. Each one will ALWAYS be hidden in my heart.

Monday: No school

Tuesday: Safety Patrol Reward Party at Splash Village departure @ 8:45 am. Bring a towel, flip flops, and you may bring spending money, but it isn't necessary. Pizza lunch will be provided. I expect we shall return to LCS by 3:30.

Wednesday: 5th grade awards ceremony @ 9:30-10:30. The rest of the day will be spent working on our memoirs.

Thursday: Surprise Field Trip in the Pinckney area.

Friday: Receive yearbooks and have time for friends to sign. Clean room, desks, and lockers.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade May 24-28

Bible: We will be continuing to study of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Romans 8:26-28 due Friday, May 28. Fifth graders will present an overview of the Old Testament during chapel on Wednesday, May 26 @ 8:30 am.

Spelling: List 33 words are compound and hyphenated terms. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, May 27. The pre-test and final test are set for Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is entitled The Search, pgs. 230-245. This selection highlights the lives of people that today inhabit the American West. Miguel, the main character, comes from a family of New Mexican sheepherders. He is challenged by efforts to find lost sheep in time to save them. The comprehension quiz is due Thursday, May 27.

Grammar lessons focus on the use of quotations and accompanying punctuation.

Writing workshop time is devoted to editing and revising the tall tale as well as writing 5th grade memoirs. The final typed, double-spaced copy of the tall tale is due Thursday, May 27.

Math: Adding/subtracting integers

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade May17-21

Bible: Fifth graders will present chapel on Wednesday @ 8:30 AM. Please join them as they present an overview of the Old Testament. This week during our study of the Bible in class, students will consider the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Proverbs is considered the book of "wisdom" as it contains many short statements filled with Truth. Ecclesiastes, on the other hand, outlines what life is like when man decides to live without God. The Bible memory verse test over Romans 8:26-27 is set for Friday, May 21.

Language Arts: The reading selection this week is a light-hearted tall tale set in the West. It's entitled McBroom the Rainmaker, pgs. 218-229. While a fun tale to read, it illustrates the struggles faced by the early settlers in that part of the country. The comprehension quiz is due Thursday, May 20.

Grammar lessons will highlight puncuation skills.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to writing a tall tale. A rubric will be provided to students so they understand what elements are required for the composition. The typed rough draft is Friday, May 21.

Math: Lessons this week include comparing integers and adding integers.

History: How does a law come to be? Students will be submitting their ideas, called bills, to 5th grade congress. By the end of the year, they will have selected a bill to become 5th grade law. This exercise will assist students in understanding how our government is organized to balance out the three branches - no branch has more authority than the other. Additionally, we will learn about how the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution to protect the freedoms of people in the United States. We will also take a look at how the nation's new leaders during the 1780's worked together despite their growing differences. A test over this material will be set for Friday, May 28.

Science: The students have completed some great science research projects. This first experience is also challenging, but in the future, it should prove to be easier. I am anxious to have them share what they learned from the process.

We will also continue thinking about the earth in relationship to the sun. We've already learned the earth's axis is slightly tilted, resulting in the four seasons we experience each year. Discussion of the concentration and amount of sunlight a region receives determines the characteristics of the seasons.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade May 10-14

Bible: Students are studying the book of Psalms. We will discuss why hiding God's word in our hearts and minds is so pleasing to God. Bible quizzes 25,26, and 27 are set for Tuesday, May 11. Students were provided notes last week for these quizzes. We will also begin a new Bible memory passage found in Romans 8:26-28. This week students are responsible for memorizing Romans 8:26 on Friday, May 14.

This is a exerpt from By the Shores of Silver Lake written by Laura Ingalls Wilder as her family journeyed over the prairies of the Dakota Territory during the 1870's.

Grammar lessons continue to provide practice identifying pronouns. Students should prepare for a test on Friday, May 14 by using their grammar packet to study.

Writing Workshop time will be devoted to completing the Science Research Paper and writing a Tall Tale set in the wild west. The research paper is due Friday, May 14 and the tall tale is due Wednesday, May 26.

Math: Students will review material presented in chapter 10 for a test on Thursday, May 13.

History: The first government of the United States had many problems and successes. Leaders had to work together to decide on a new plan of government. As a result, delegates created three branches of government.

Science: Science research project board and paper due Friday, May 14.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade May 3-7

Bible: Students groups will be preparing a short presentations about the Old Testament books of Esther and Job. We will also continue planning our chapel presentations. Quiz 24 on Ezra is set for Tuesday, May 4. Students will write the message in their own words that is communicated in Proverbs 3:1-12 on Friday, May 7.

Spelling: List 30 words are literature terms. Spelling sentences are due Thursday, May 6. The spelling pre-test and final test are scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Grammar lessons will continue to identify the parts of speech known as the pronoun.



Writing Workshop will be devoted to completing the science research report as well as writing a tall tale. The science research report rough draft is due Friday, May 7. The final project is due Friday, May 14.



Math: Concepts covered: surface area of a prism and volume of a prism



History: How did our Founding Fathers construct our government? What did they base their ideas upon? How are laws made in the United States. Sounds dull, but it's really quite exciting!!



Science: Science Research Project should be completed on Friday, May 14. It will be displayed at our prospective family open house on May 20.

Livingston Christian Schools 5th Grade April 26-30

Bible: After 209 years, Israel was conquered by the Assyrians while Judah survived 345 years before they were overpowered by Babylon. Some time later, the Persian Empire came to power. During this time, Ezra was born. He was from the line of Levites so he was a priest. As an adult, he had a deep desire to return to the home of his fathers. With permission from the Persian king, Ezra returned to Jerusalem to see what he could do about the ruins of God's temple. Ezra was a true, godly leader who helped many return to the Promised Land and begin the process of rebuilding the temple. Students will have Quiz 23 on Tuesday, April 27 and also write about the message of Proverbs 3:1-12 on Friday, April 30.

Grammar lessons will focus on the part of speech called the pronoun.

Math: Review

History: Test on Chapter 9 Monday, April 26. Notes were provided.

Science: Ideas about the seasons and the sun were sometimes unusual in days past. Today, with modern equipment we can better understand the reason for the seasons and the position of the sun in space. We will explore some of the false ideas scientists believed years ago.

We are learning a specific way to take notes while reading. This technique will assist students in writing their research project report in the coming weeks. As you have probably noticed, we are not on schedule for the science research project. That's ok. I'll give updated due dates to the students as each piece needs to be completed. Remember, most of the project is to be completed at school. You should have your data tables, log book, and three resources ready to share with me by Wednesday, April 28.

Other:
*Standardized Testing this week!!! Every morning this week, from 8:30-11:30 will be set aside for testing. Eat a nutritious breakfast and get to bed early so your brain is ready to focus.
*Final analogy meet set for Friday, April 30.
*National Day of Prayer walk to the Pinckney Park, Thursday, May 6. Parents are encouraged to join us that day from 1:30-3:00.
